Prosecutor: Westwood Officer Fired Shot After Accused Old Tappan Burglar Refused To Drop Weapon
UPDATE: A Westwood police officer fired a single shot during an overnight confrontation with a man who refused to drop a weapon moments after he tried to break into an Old Tappan residence, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said Monday. Dustin Van Riper, 22, fled the Old Tappan residence after borough police arrived there before dawn Friday, Calo said. Westwood police found him a short time later in a Mill Street backyard, he said. Manhunt For Burglary Suspect Prompting Lockout Of Schools In Northern Westchester
An attempted burglary in Northern Westchester has led to a manhunt and a school lockout. The incident took place around 11:47 a.m. Wednesday when an attempted burglary occurred at 3 Lafayette St. in Verplanck, said New York State Trooper AJ Hicks. Police are not releasing many details but did confirm that the NYSP are searching for a suspect and that schools in the area are in a lockout at this time. A 26-year-old Teaneck man led police on a chase from Westwood to Paramus -- exceeding 100 mph and one point and nearly ramming a police cruiser -- before he crashed and was taken into custody, authorities said. A 30-year-old man was arrested while attempting to break into an occupied home through a window, Town of Poughkeepsie Police said. Police in Yorktown tracked down a pre-teen from Mohegan Lake who allegedly attempted to break into a local elementary school. Officers from the Yorktown Police Department received a report at approximately 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning from staff at the George Washington Elementary School, where there were reports of a broken window.
