Newark Teen Dies After Collapsing Playing Basketball At YMCA: Police A 17-year-old Newark boy died on Saturday, March 8, after he collapsed while playing basketball at a YMCA, authorities said. At 2:48 p.m., firefighters responded to the YMCA at Kenneth Gibson Blvd and found the 17-year-old unresponsive inside the second floor gymnasium, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said. The teen had been playing basketball before collapsing, Miranda said. He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:13 p.m. following a cardiac event, authorities said.
