During the 2018-2019 hunting season, New Yorkers hunted down 1,295 black bears statewide, a decrease of 125 from the previous year. Of the bears that were hunted, 349 were killed by bow, 66 were killed by a muzzleloader and 11 were taken by youth hunters. In the Southern Zone, 804 bears were killed, 60 percent of which were male, and 491 bears were killed in the Northern Zone. ID Released For 20-Year-Old Killed In Route 17 Crash New York State Police have identified the person killed in a single-vehicle crash on Route 17 on Wednesday. Devon Persaud, 20, of Queens Village, died around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 on Route 17 near Exit 129 in Blooming Grove, said New York State Trooper Steve Nevel. Troopers found Persaud's 2007 Dodge Caliber down an embankment, state police said. There were no passengers in the vehicle.  The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
