Michael Quartey, a devoted father, attorney, professor, and the force behind several major college football bowl games, died suddenly on May 15, 2025, his family confirmed. He was 47 years old.
Quartey, of New Jersey, founded the Tropical Bowl, FCS Bowl, and National Bowl, giving under-the-radar athletes a real shot at pro football careers. Over the past 15 years, his events drew scouts from the NFL, CFL, UFL, and beyond.

Plainfield Man Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of Star Football Player: Prosecutors
Maurice Pierce, 23-year-old Plainfield man was arrested on Monday, Sept. 25 and charged with murder in the shooting death of Jameer Outsey, a former college football player, back in August, authorities said.
On Sunday, Aug. 12, Elizabeth police responded to North Broad Street and Magnolia Avenue and found Outsey, a Bridgewater resident, suffering from a gunshot wound, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves, and Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Football Star, 24, Dies Of Injuries From Trenton Shooting: Prosecutor
A 24-year-old man from Mercer County died of injuries suffered in a shooting in Trenton earlier this month, authorities said.
Justin Prescott Reed, of Ewing, died on May 22, as a result of injuries he sustained in the May 14 shooting on Brunswick Avenue, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday, May 31.
No arrests had been made in the shooting as of press time, authorities said.
Reed was a star football player at Ewing High School. He later played football at Delaware Valley University, Monroe College and Mercer Community College, his obituary said.
