A 19-year-old former varsity high school football player was in critical condition Monday following a Sunday night incident in which he was shot in the head in Toms River, authorities said. Javon Cutler, of Bayville, was in the passenger's seat of a friend's car leaving the Toms River Apartments on Main Street when he was shot around 8:15 p.m., Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. A 43-year-old man from Toms River was killed on Tuesday after he lost control of his convertible and struck a utility pole head-on, authorities said. Roy Piazza was driving westbound on Route 571 about 5:10 p.m. when his 2005 Chrysler Crossfire slid across the road and struck the pole head-on at the intersection of Whitesville Road and Leawood Avenue, Toms River police said. A 55-year-old man from Jackson was indicted for vehicular homicide Wednesday in connection with a fatal car accident last fall. Douglas Thompson's charges stem from an Oct. 15, 2019, drunk driving crash that killed Thomas Marciano, 65, of Toms River, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.
