Christopher Sharkey, From Mineola, Army Veteran, Dies At 53
A Colorado man who grew up in a large family in Mineola and served in the U.S. Army has died. Christopher Anthony Sharkey died of natural causes in Denver at the age of 53. He was the son of Bernadette (McDermott) Sharkey and the late Laurence J. Sharkey. Sharkey was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Mineola. He graduated from St. Mary's High School, served in the army, then moved to Denver. He worked as a carpenter and cook and received a nurse's aide certificate. It was just a test. New York City was struck with an asteroid, killing more than one million. … In a simulation. In a NASA simulation of a fictional scenario, a 200-foot wide asteroid struck New York, leveling buildings and killing an estimated 1.3 million in Manhattan. The simulation was part of the “National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan,” which was published by the White House this week at the Planetary Defense Conference in Maryland. Bill To Ban Declawing Cats Gains Steam in NY
New York is taking measures to become the first state to ban the declawing of cats. The state Senate passed several bills this week, including one bill that is popular among animal welfare advocates that would ban inhumane declawing of felines. Denver and several cities in California have already passed similar measures. The bill will now have to pass through a second committee before it moves forward to the Assembly. Northern Westchester Fencer Brings Home Gold at Junior Olympics
A teen from Northern Westchester has been awarded a gold medal for his fencing abilities at the 2019 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Denver. The fencer, Nickoloz Lortkipanidze of Mount Kisco, is a 16-year-old junior at Fox Lane High School in Bedford. He won gold in the Cadet event (17 and under) and placed 6th in the Juniors division (20 and under). The four-day tournament was held between Friday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 18 and involved upwards of 2,000 athletes from 44 states. Area Priest Reassigned By Pope Francis
A popular area priest is going back in the service. Father Bill Muhm, 61, who began his role as an administrator at the Church of the Most Precious Blood in Walden in Orange County late last year, has been given a new assignment by Pope Francis. Last month, Muhm was advised that the pope had chosen him to serve as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of the Military Services. A lawyer already behind bars for helping to facilitate a $19 million fraud scheme received an increased sentence after she attempted to hide nearly $50,000 in cash from the government. Diane Dalmy was sentenced in New Haven District Court to 60 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for her role in a securities “pump and dump” scheme.
