A police crossing guard is in critical condition after he was struck while directing traffic on Long Island, officers announced on Thursday, Feb. 26.
The guard was working on Sunrise Highway near Merrick Avenue in Merrick at 8:03 a.m. when he was hit by a white 2020 Toyota Tacoma, according to Nassau County Police.
Detectives said the truck was operated by a 30-year-old man who remained at the scene. The injured crossing guard was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

Maryland State Police said Jose Gregario Cruz-Mendoza, 45, of Lanham, was arrested on Sunday, Aug. 17, after multiple 911 callers reported a white Ford Excursion spraying bullets on I-97 and later along Route 50 in Annapolis.
