A New York man has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a juvenile in Bergen County, authorities said.
Jose Mendez-Ortiz, 51, of Pearl River, NY, was taken into custody Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Elmwood Park Police Department, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

The single confirmed case is not known to be related to the Ocean County measles case reported last week, NJDOH said. New Jersey is not currently experiencing a measles outbreak, which is defined as three or more related cases by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NJDOH said.

A 15-year-old boy who claimed to be the victim of a drive-by shooting in Elmwood Park accidentally shot himself, authorities now say, and is facing criminal charges.
The shooting happened on Saturday, July 5, around 5:04 p.m. on Donor Avenue, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.
When police arrived, they found the teen with gunshot wounds to his hand and leg. He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, treated, and later released.

He told officers he had met a woman, later identified as Elizabeth Womack, 37, of Elmwood Park, outside the 7-Eleven at Market Street and Mola Boulevard earlier that morning. Several sheds, garages, and a car were destroyed in a stubborn, multiple-alarm fire Sunday afternoon, April 27 in Elmwood Park.
The fire broke out on Phillip Avenue, just east of River Drive, according to incident photographer Boyd A. Loving.
At least one two-car garage was completely consumed by flames, and multiple sheds and smaller garages sustained heavy damage, Loving said.
