Two Dogs Rescued, Dozens Displaced After Fire Breaks Out At Apartment Complex In Westchester
Dozens of people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment complex in Westchester on Saturday. The blaze at 137 Hawthorne Ave. in Yonkers, a four-story building, began around 2:45 p.m. with first-arriving fire units being met by a large volume of fire from a first-floor apartment, said Daniel P. Flynn of the Yonkers Fire Department. The fire quickly spread to the second-floor apartment directly above, with minor spreads to the third- and fourth-floor apartments directly above, Flynn said. School in Westchester Evacuated Following Written Threat
A written threat forced the evacuation of a Westchester elementary school on Wednesday. The Quaker Ridge Elementary School in Scarsdale was evacuated on Wednesday morning out of precaution, after a threat was found in the building. The nature of the threat was not disclosed by police. Students were temporarily relocated to an off-site location, according to school officials, which is in line with district emergency protocols. Bronxville School To Replace Main Gym Floor Following Flooding
One of the gyms at the Bronxville School will be closed for several weeks following the recent flooding that wreaked havoc on the first floor of the building. On Sept. 25, students had an emergency dismissal, when flooded water came pouring into the building, canceling classes and causing damage to several areas of the school. Governor Phil Murphy on Tuesday signed Executive Order 33 declaring a state of emergency in Bergen, Essex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Passaic counties as a result of this past weekend’s torrential rains. UPDATE: Three firefighters had to be treated for heat-related injuries -- one of whom was hospitalized -- after a cigarette ignited a rapidly-spreading blaze that ripped through a townhouse complex in New Milford on Sunday.
