97-Year-Old Man Dies In Jersey City Fire, Prosecutor Says: 'Unimageable Loss'
A 97-year-old Jersey City man died from injuries sustained in a fire on Sunday, May 18, authorities said.
At 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 15 the Jersey City Fire Department responded to 318 York St. and found a fire in a basement apartment, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
While battling the blaze, firefighters located Albert Von Chorba, Suarez said. He was transported to a nearby hospital before being hospitalized at a burn unit, Suarez said. He was pronounced dead shortly after noon on Sunday, Suarez said.

A man found asleep behind the wheel of a car near a Hudson County school was arrested after officers spotted a loaded handgun in plain view and later discovered cocaine, pills, and cash, authorities said.
The incident happened around 8:24 a.m. on Friday, May 16, on Hudson Avenue in Guttenberg, according to Police Chief Frank Pelaez.
Officers were alerted by a concerned passerby who reported a man passed out in a vehicle, police said. When officers arrived, they found the car in reverse and angled into the roadway, with the driver asleep and bleeding heavily from his finger.

Just two weeks before a deadly helicopter crash over the Hudson River, Navy veteran Sean Johnson posted a video of himself flying past the Freedom Tower.
“When it all comes together,” the 36-year-old wrote on Facebook on March 27, alongside the clip showing him piloting a Bell 206.

A mother and a daughter were arrested and charged on Tuesday, April 1, after they lied about a fatal crash in Jersey City last year that killed a 43-year-old motorcyclist.
On Thursday, Oct. 31, at 8:55 a.m., Jersey City police responded to a motorcycle crash at Sip Avenue and Routes 1 and 9, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
The motorcyclist, Steven Brown, was injured after he collided with a GMC vehicle at the intersection, Suarez said. Brown was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he was soon pronounced dead, Suarez said.
