Long Island Sound Tornado Confirmed During Tropical Storm Isaias Reports of a tornado touching down in coastal Fairfield County from the Long Island Sound during the height of Tropical Storm Isaias have proven to be accurate. The National Weather Service confirmed late Friday afternoon, Aug. 7 that a storm cell produced a waterspout off the ocean that made landfall as an EF-1 tornado in the Saugatuck section of Westport at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. EF-1 tornadoes are the second-lowest level twisters, but still pack estimated maximum winds of between 86 and 110 miles per hour. The twister did not last long, traveling only about 50 yards …

Three Men Rescued From Raft On Long Island Sound Police officers came to the rescue of a group of boaters who were fighting a losing battle against the current while rafting on the Long Island Sound. Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers on patrol at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2 found three men in an eight-foot raft in the water more than a mile off Sunken Meadow State Park, where they had launched from. Man Clinging To Kayak Without Life Jacket Rescued In Long Island Sound A 27-year-old man holding on to his kayak without a life jacket was rescued in the Long Island Sound  It happened on Wednesday, July 8 at around 11 p.m. off the coast of Oyster Bay, approximately half mile from Center Island, Nassau County Police said. Nassau County Marine Bureau 5 discovered the man yelling for help. He was then recovered from the water by Marine Bureau and brought back to shore.  He was treated by Nassau County medical personnel and in stable condition.

The incident happened Tuesday, July 7 at about 4:30 p.m. off the coast of Crab Meadow Beach in Fort Salonga in Suffolk County. Upon arriving, Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers Dave Froehlich and Patrick Ennis found the five, all men, standing on the underside of a recreational 21-foot Pro-Line vessel that overturned after being struck by a wave approximately 20 minutes earlier.
