Man Charged In Hit-Run Death Of Kings Park Teacher/Coach Was High On Fentanyl, DA Says
A Mattituck man has pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with allegedly hitting and killing a popular Kings Park teacher and coach who was jogging in St. James while he was driving high.
Smithtown resident Michael McDermott, 37, who taught at Kings Park High School, was jogging in the southbound shoulder of Lake Avenue, north of Oak Street when he was struck by a Nissan at approximately 12:20 p.m. on July 14, police said.
The driver, Keith Clancy, 32, was tracked down on the Long Island Expressway near exit 69 in Manorville after fleeing the scene.

ID Released For Man Who Dies After Jeep Rolls Over During Medical Event On LIE
Police have released the identity of a Manorville man who died following a crash on the LIE after suffering a medical emergency.
William Thomas, 60, died around 4:50 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, after crashing while driving on the Long Island Expressway, said the Suffolk County Police.
Thomas was driving a 2014 Jeep Patriot westbound on the LIE, just east of exit 70, when it veered off the road and overturned, police said.
Detectives believe Thomas suffered a medical event prior to the crash.
A passenger in the Jeep, Catherine Lucero, 55, of Riverhead, was uninjured.
