Midland Park Officer Injured Subduing Angered Suspect
A Midland Park police officer required hospital treatment after a disturbed man bit him and hit him with a metal laundry basket, authorities said. The officer and his colleagues were trying to speak with Richard Harris, 30, when he became violent, Police Chief Michael Powderley said. Harris then took off running and was grabbed outside Park Laudromat on Godwin Avenue, the chief said. He then resisted attempts to subdue him, sending one of the officers to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, Powderley said. Bear Mountain Bridge Fatal Jumper Identified
A man who jumped to his death from Bear Mountain Bridge has been identified by state police. The incident took place in Northern Westchester County in Cortlandt around 2:15 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 12. Trooper AJ Hicks said the troopers responded to the bridge for a report of a disabled vehicle. An investigation determined that Ronald E. Welte Jr., age 62, of Midland Park, New Jersey, left his vehicle and jumped from the bridge, Hicks said. Boy, 16, ID'd As Victim Killed In Midland Park Fire
Authorities have identified the teen killed in this week's Midland Park house fire as a 16-year-old male resident. Alexander Lopez-Pena's body was found by responders on the first floor of the 222 Franklin Ave. home on Thursday, Feb. 2, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. A teenage boy was killed Thursday night in a ferocious, fast-moving house fire in Midland Park. No injuries were reported in a heavy house fire in North Haledon. Fed by gas from a stove, the noontime blaze on Monday, Jan. 16, ravaged the two-story, wood-frame home across from the Salesian Sisters' Mary Help of Christians Academy on Belmont Avenue.
