As of Wednesday, May 13, Long Island has met only five of seven metrics laid out by the state before regions are permitted to reopen. Long Island continues to see new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), though the region is approaching the minimum criteria to begin reopening the economy.
In Nassau County, 119,881 residents have been tested for COVID-19, with 38,434 testing positive, according to the state Department of Health. In Suffolk County, 117,873 residents have been tested, resulting in 37,062 positive tests.
There have been 1,991 COVID-19-related deaths in Nassau, while 1,654 Suffolk residents have died from the virus.

The number of new novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases on Long Island continues to drop, as the hospitalization, death, and intubation rates continue to trend downward across New York State.
In Nassau County, there were 120 new positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 38,337 since the outbreak began in early March. There were 209 new cases in Suffolk County, as the total climbed to 36,911.
There have been 1,973 Nassau County residents who died from COVID-19, while there have been 1,639 fatalities of Suffolk residents.

Duo Nabbed Attempting To Burglarize Occupied Long Island Residence, Police Say
Two suspects were apprehended by officers while they were attempting to rob an occupied Long Island residence at knifepoint, police said.
It happened on Friday, May 8 at around 8:45 p.m. in New Cassel.
Pierre K. Fede, 31, of New Cassel and Stanley Brevet, 34, also of New Cassel, forcefully entered the residence on Prospect Avenue in New Cassel, Nassau County Police said.
As both men demanded money, Fede was armed with a 4-inch dark-colored pocket knife as they pushed the male victim, 50, to a rear room, according to police.
