Funding For ShotSpotter Detection System Approved In Suffolk County After Increase In Shootings
Following a significant increase in shootings, the Suffolk County Legislature has approved funding to restore the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system.
The Legislature approved the funding on Tuesday, Oct. 11, for the technology that was discontinued in 2019, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced.
According to the DA's Office, shooting incidents doubled from 2020 to 2021, after the ShotSpotter program was discontinued.
In 2021, shootings increased by another 34 percent, Tierney said.

1 Killed, 3 Injured In Crash Between Car, Minibus On Long Island, Police Say
A 21-year-old woman was killed and three were people injured, including a student, during a crash between a car and a minibus on Long Island.
The crash took place in North Amityville around 8 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 29 on Albany Avenue.
According to the Suffolk County Police, the woman was driving a Honda Civic northbound on Albany Avenue, south of Russell Court, when her vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck a minibus.
The woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Suspect Nabbed In Stabbing At Parking Lot Of Long Island Gas Station
A suspect has been apprehended after an overnight stabbing on Long Island.
It happened around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 25 in Wyandanch.
Following an alteration, Ronald Carson, age 49, of Wyandanch, stabbed a man in the parking lot of BP Gas, located at 1501 Straight Path, Suffolk County Police said.
The victim, of North Amityville, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
Carson was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
