Pets Rescued From Hawthorne House Fire, Flames Climb From Basement To Roof
Two pets were rescued from a Friday night Hawthorne house fire that raced from the basement to the attic. No injuries were reported in the two-alarm blaze, which responders said broke out in a home at the corner of Maitland Avenue and May Street at 10 p.m. and quickly made its way to the third floor and into the attic, Hawthorne Fire Chief Joseph Speranza said. Firefighters had the main body knocked in a little over an hour and a half, keeping it from blowing through the roof, Speranza said. A self-storage facility is going up at the former AT&T data center in Rochelle Park. Tulfra Real Estate -- a local real estate redevelopment company -- announced a $10.3 million construction loan for the Passaic Street facility, funded by First Bank in Hamilton. Samantha Delmonico of Hawthorne died on Saturday, Sept. 29. She was 42 years old. A Wayne native, Samantha lived in North Haledon and Haledon. She had worked for the Passaic County Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher. A fundraiser for her daughter, Mia Mateo, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Underdog Bar & Grill. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne.

Former Bergen Catholic Football Player Andrew Hazuda Dies, 27
Wayne native Andrew Hazuda died on July 29 after a long illness. He was 27 years old. Andrew had lived most of his life in North Haledon and was a graduate of Manchester Regional High School. There, he served as captain of the baseball team and a member of the football team. He also played football for Bergen Catholic High School. Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 2 from 4 to 8 p.m at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home. Andrew is survived by his parents, Paul and Christine Hazuda; and his sister, Sara Paige Hazuda.
