Pets Rescued From Hawthorne House Fire, Flames Climb From Basement To Roof
Two pets were rescued from a Friday night Hawthorne house fire that raced from the basement to the attic. No injuries were reported in the two-alarm blaze, which responders said broke out in a home at the corner of Maitland Avenue and May Street at 10 p.m. and quickly made its way to the third floor and into the attic, Hawthorne Fire Chief Joseph Speranza said. Firefighters had the main body knocked in a little over an hour and a half, keeping it from blowing through the roof, Speranza said. Each set donated by at-home pet services provider Canine Company includes masks in three sizes to fit a range of pets, from small mammals to giant breed dogs. A self-storage facility is going up at the former AT&T data center in Rochelle Park. Tulfra Real Estate -- a local real estate redevelopment company -- announced a $10.3 million construction loan for the Passaic Street facility, funded by First Bank in Hamilton. Samantha Delmonico of Hawthorne died on Saturday, Sept. 29. She was 42 years old. A Wayne native, Samantha lived in North Haledon and Haledon. She had worked for the Passaic County Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher. A fundraiser for her daughter, Mia Mateo, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Underdog Bar & Grill. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne.

Former Bergen Catholic Football Player Andrew Hazuda Dies, 27
Wayne native Andrew Hazuda died on July 29 after a long illness. He was 27 years old. Andrew had lived most of his life in North Haledon and was a graduate of Manchester Regional High School. There, he served as captain of the baseball team and a member of the football team. He also played football for Bergen Catholic High School. Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 2 from 4 to 8 p.m at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home. Andrew is survived by his parents, Paul and Christine Hazuda; and his sister, Sara Paige Hazuda. A dump truck crashed into a guardrail on North Watchung and Rea avenues in Hawthorne Friday. No injuries were reported. North Haledon and Hawthorne police both responded. Last month, a dump truck crashed into a Hawthorne home on Sunrise Drive.

One of the youngest survivors of last year's Las Vegas massacre has arrived in North Haledon. Paramus Catholic sweethearts Megan Iannuzzi Panzera and Valdo Panzera Jr. welcomed baby boy Valdo Panzera III -- who Iannuzzi was several weeks pregnant with during the deadly shooting last October, NBC reports.
