Jocelyn Pietri was walking hand in hand with her boyfriend, Wiston Perlaza, on Valentine's Day in Nutley when they were struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Perlaza died from his injuries while Pietri suffered serious injuries and has been in a hospital and rehabilitation facility. A fundraiser has been launched to support Pietri and her family with the financial burden of caring for her expenses, including a wheelchair and travel expenses for Pietri's family. Two 16-year-old Newark teenagers were arrested and charged for attempting to break into vehicles in Nutley on the evening of Thursday, March 28, authorities said. At 10:45 p.m., Belleville police notified Nutley police of two people wearing ski masks who were trying to enter homes in the township, Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo said. Two men are at large after they used a skimming device on an ATM in Nutley to steal $1,000 from a customer's account on Saturday, March 9, authorities said. The skimming device was placed on an ATM at Proponent Bank on Washington Avenue on Thursday, Feb. 22, Nutley police said. The suspects removed the skimming device on Wednesday, Feb. 28, police said. Cooking Oil Thieves Busted: Nutley PD
Two men were arrested and charged with stealing cooking oil from a restaurant in Nutley, authorities said. On Saturday, Feb. 24, Lewis Cogman, a Belleville resident and Bashir Wilson, a Newark resident, stole the oil from a restaurant on Washington Avenue, causing damage to the parking lot, Chief Thomas Strumolo said. A 49-year-old Queens, NY man was arrested and charged on Tuesday, Feb. 27 with scamming $30,000 from a 76-year-old Nutley woman through an email scam, authorities said. UPDATE: The victim has been ID'ed as 22-year-old Wiston Perlaza. One person was killed in a motor vehicle crash in Nutley on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 14, police said. The hit-and-run motor vehicle crash occurred at 7 p.m. at Milton Avenue at the Garden State Parkway overpass, Nutley police said. Nutley police and the Essex County Prosecutors Office are working to identify the perpetrator, officers said. The victim has not been identified. A Passaic man who worked at a bank in Nutley stole more than $100,000 worth of Social Security benefits from the government in the name of a deceased customer, federal authorities charged.
