Kazimir's Pet Shop in Hackensack will be closing next month after 68 years in business. "The internet and chain stores have taken over the industry," the pet shop announced on social media. "It's not easy for a small business to survive. A big part of our life will be gone but we must move forward." A closing sale is in effect until the store's last day on April 15. Ridgefield Police Officer Takes In Pit Bull Grieving Owner
A local Pit Bull whose owner recently died has found a new home with a Ridgefield police officer. Kevin Nebbia of Cliffside Park met Spanky while working. He and others in his department had been responding to calls in the dog's neighborhood over the past year. When Nebbia, 40, returned from vacation in January, he learned that Spanky's owner had passed away, and the dog was at the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro. Outbreak Of Pet Store Related Infection Hits New York
A multi-state outbreak of a drug-resistant illness linked to pet store puppies is currently under investigation, according to the CDC. As of December 2017, two people in both Connecticut and New York were infected with Campylobacter bacteria -- which is resistant to commonly recommended, first-line antibiotics making it difficult to treat. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that contact with puppies sold through Petland stores is a likely source of this outbreak. Cash is a seven pound Chihuahua mix who likes other small dogs and is good with kids 10 and up, the SPCA said.
