Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro has officially signed the 2019 County Budget, which was recently approved through a bipartisan vote. The budget, which was signed Friday, Dec. 14, includes numerous changes, such as the reduction of the county property tax levy for what will be the fifth consecutive year. The budget will also include a lower property tax rate for the fourth year, from $3.54 to $3.45 for $1,000 of true value assessments. Day Vetoes Amended $709M 2019 Budget
Rockland County Executive Ed Day used his line-item veto power to strike down 95 amendments totaling several million dollars to the 2019 budget. In vetoing the amended budget, which tops out at $700 million, brought to him by the Democratic majority, Day said the "ill-advised amendments" would have jeopardized the county's plan to dig itself out of a fiscal hole. “The majority’s amended budget would have been a return to the days of speculative revenue, over-estimating sales tax revenue and a refusal to modernize county government,” said Day. “In short, a budget like theirs could lead…

The budget was approved by a 13-4 vote, with the support of county Democrats. County Executive George Latimer said balancing next year's county budget requires creative solutions but also some tough decisions. Latimer has introduced his proposed $1.94 billion to the county Board of Legislators, which can revise the budget before its passage next month. In a Wednesday speech before the Business Council of Westchester, Latimer, a 65-year-old Democrat from Rye, said, "That was a fast year." He spoke to the group a year ago after defeating Republican Rob Astorino. Latimer pointed out that he inherited a multi-million dollar budget deficit and depleted reserves but …

Westchester’s financial report card saw its credit rating cut one level by two prominent agencies. Westchester County was notified by S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings that the county’s financial outlook has been downgraded to AA+. Moody’s assigned Aa1 to Westchester, officials announced on Tuesday afternoon. The county has now lost its AAA rating - the highest ranking available - in each of the Big 3 rating agencies. Bloomberg News cited Westchester's move to "draw down its cash reserves to cover retroactive raises given to government employees" as the primary reason fo…

Welcome Home: Understanding Closing Costs
When moving to a home, costs tend to add up rather quickly. Several items will need to be budgeted for right away such as replacing carpet, updating appliances, moving and closing costs. When buying a home the title of the property will be transferred from the seller to the buyer which is called the closing. The fees that need to be paid at that time are considered closing costs. Closing costs vary widely based on a number of factors and you will receive a loan estimate within three business days of receiving your completed loan application. Then three days before closing, you will rece…
