An accused gunman formally confessed to shooting a man to death outside a Long Island business. Joseph Scalafani, age 34, of Mastic Beach, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Suffolk County Court on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the death of Alex Smith. A husband and wife will avoid jail after admitting fault in a fire at their New York vacation rental that killed two sisters.
