A Long Island man was arrested in connection with a high-speed pursuit that seriously injured a police officer.
On Thursday, April 2, Suffolk County Sheriff's deputies were conducting a narcotics investigation in the Middle Island area when they spotted a man matching the description of a suspect wanted for a high-speed pursuit in Southold and Riverhead on Tuesday, March 31, that badly injured a Riverhead Town police officer, said Suffolk County Sheriff's Chief Michael P. A man driving more than double the posted speed limit was allegedly drunk when he was stopped on Long Island, authorities announced.
Suffolk County Sheriff’s deputies stopped Stony Brook resident Vernon Lewis, 55, shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, when he was spotted driving 80 mph in a posted 40 mph zone on Route 111 in Brentwood.
According to Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, during the speeding stop, deputies determined that Lewis was potentially intoxicated, and he was taken into custody.
