Morris Motorist Who May Lose Leg From Head-On Crash With Passaic Driver Gets $1.5M Settlement
A nursing assistant who may end up losing a leg from a head-on crash with a Passaic County driver in Morris County reportedly has won a $1.49 million settlement. Melissa Van Orden, now 47, of Budd Lake was driving home from work on southbound Route 206 in Andover when an oncoming Volkswagen crossed the double-yellow center line and slammed head-on into her Hyundai Santa Fe shortly after 7 a.m. on Dec. 22, 2019, authorities said. The community is rallying for the family of Totowa's Jonathan DiGangi, who died of COVID-19 at just 26 years old. More than $16,100 had been raised on a GoFundMe launched to cover funeral expenses as of Wednesday. DiGangi was a manager at Jersey Johnny's Restaurant in Pequannock, and was passionate about cars, his obituary says. He took an interest in Japanese culture and visited he country twice. This Morris County District Just Gave Students Their First Snow Day Of The Year
A Morris County district became the first in the area to announce students would have a snow day Thursday. Students in Madison will have an early dismissal Wednesday afternoon and a day off on Thursday, district officials said. Classes will be remote on Friday for staff and students, the district said. Many districts are already remote and plan on continuing classes regardless of the snow, while other are factoring in outages and giving students work to do at home, or possibly a snow day. Totowa and Holmdel public schools announced early dismissals for Wednesday.

Tour Bus Involved In Route 80 Chain-Reaction Crash
A tour bus was involved in a six-vehicle chain-reaction crash Monday afternoon on rain-slicked Route 80. Minor injuries were reported among some occupants of the other vehicles involved in the westbound crash near mile marker 55.8 in Totowa shortly before 1:30 p.m., New Jersey State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez said. Daniel Alejandro Maldonado of Garfield died on Nov. 7. He was 30 years old. A GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses launched by Kimberly Rosario had raised more than $2,300 as of Saturday. Daniel was raised in Paterson, Haledon and Garfield, and graduated from Garfield High School in 2009, his obituary says. A Haledon man who had deliveries sent to a Paterson location so he could swipe cash from drivers had the tables turned when a would-be victim overpowered him and called police, authorities said. Another Passaic County school has gone remote due to COVID-19. A High Mountain School student tested positive, officials said Thursday. The student is recovering at home, and the borough's two local schools will close for the rest of the week -- at least, Mayor Randy George said.
