'Right Thing': Grewal Launches Police Crisis Intervention Training In Paterson, Trenton, AC
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said Tuesday that he’s committed to establishing statewide crisis intervention training for law enforcement officers at all levels, among several enhancements aimed at “strengthening trust between police officers and the communities they serve.” “Experts agree that one of the most effective ways to reduce police use-of-force and death-in-custody incidents is by expanding the use of Crisis Intervention Teams (CITs), which help officers respond to situations involving individuals with mental health issues,” Grewal said. However, CIT training “is e…

Authorities: Police Shooting Of Knife-Wielding Jersey Shore Kidnapper Justified
Police were justified in shooting an Ocean County ex-con who cornered them with a knife after stabbing a K-9, authorities announced Wednesday. “Drop the knife!” the officers yelled repeatedly as Edward Walsh advanced at least 20 feet toward them, refusing to stop, during a November 2018 encounter in a Mantoloking home, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said. “Officers found a large knife with a brown handle next to Walsh and a second knife in his waistband,” the prosecutor said. They administered first aid until EMS arrived, Billhimer said. The K-9 was treated at a local animal…

Bodycam Shows State Trooper Was Justified Shooting Man Who Charged At Police With Hunting Knife
Thanks to a body camera, a New Jersey State Police trooper was found completely justified in shooting a man who charged at him and fellow troopers with a hunting knife, authorities announced Friday. The results were among the first under a new directive for police use-of-force investigations in New Jersey issued earlier this month by state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal. The troopers had gone to a Hardwick home in Warren County on June 12, 2018 to investigate a domestic dispute, the attorney general said. Witnesses told them Stephen Cogelia, 32, had threatened to kill his father, saying, “…

Shortly after, a second Danbury police officer fired multiple rounds f…

Prez: 'Salacious' Newspaper Report On Police Use Of Force Slanted, Selfish, Irresponsible
A story from NJ Advance Media on law enforcement use of force will look to develop controversy and discontent by providing data with little context about the use of force officers are required to use. Police officers face an unparalleled challenge of saving lives, restoring peace, and bringing criminals to justice. The situations they face are dynamic and involve split-second decisions. They are not done within the safety and security of a newsroom. The actions they take can mean life or death. In 2016 alone over 1,800 New Jersey Police Officers were assaulted while doing…
