A family of four was burned out of their Lodi home by a fierce, fast-moving fire. The Christopher Street blaze at the corner of Charlton Avenue instantly went to two alarms after breaking out shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17. The fire raced through the 2½-story wood-frame home near Route 46, forcing firefighters out before the roof collapsed. No serious injuries were immediately reported. Garfield House Fire Doused
No injuries were reported in a quickly-doused Garfield house fire. The Malcolm Avenue blaze broke out on the second floor of a two-story wood-frame house around 10:50 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10. Firefighters limited what was a fair amount of damage, knocking the flames down within minutes of their arrival. The fire was declared under control around 11:30 p.m. The cause wasn't immediately determined, although a faulty exhaust fan may have been to blame. Flames blew through the roof and upper-floor windows of a Garfield building that houses a fire safety business and apartments, authorities said. First-responding police officers got four tenants of apartments above Firematic Safety Equipment out before part of a roof and stairwell collapsed in the two-story River Drive building shortly after 4:30 a.m., Police Capt. UPDATE: Firefighters doused a Friday night garage fire off Route 17 in Wood-Ridge that totaled a performance sports car. The call came in from Hackensack Street off Anderson Avenue a minute before 6 p.m. Firefighters cut their way into the detached garage and extinguished the blaze, which destroyed a later-model red Dodge Viper -- some models of which carry price tags well over $100,000. Firefighters Douse Blaze In Rutherford Home Under Renovation
Firefighters in Rutherford quickly extinguished an attic fire Monday night. The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. in a single-family Victorian home being renovated at Mountain Way and Windsor Place, the department said. It instantly went to two alarms, with fire in the walls of the 2½-story, wood-frame home. Firefighters had the blaze under control within a half hour. No injuries were reported. Fire Chief Dennis Gentile was the incident commander. His squad was assisted by firefighters from East Rutherford and Wallington.

A 20-year-old Wallington woman and an accused heroin dealer from Paterson were both charged with murder in the death of her 8-month-old baby. A former assistant Bergen County voting machine custodian from Wallington who was accused of sexually assaulting two pre-teens has died by suicide, multiple sources confirmed Saturday. Daryl Mahoney, 51, survived a previous attempt at the county jail following his arrest in March. This time, as before, it was by hanging, authorities confirmed. Every dog has his day, they say, and the four-legged members of the Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 Unit shared theirs on Saturday with dozens of mostly young attendees and their parents at Overpeck Park.
