Longtime West New York Police Officer Dies Weeks Before Retirement
David Martinez, who served West New York as a police officer for 25 years, died on Saturday, Aug. 16, the police department announced.
"Officer Martinez faithfully served the West New York community for 25 years with honor, dedication, and compassion," West New York police said.
Martinez died weeks away from his retirement, police said. Sources tell Daily Voice his death was sudden.

A 59-year-old North Bergen man remains hospitalized following a three-car crash on Monday, May 12, authorities said.
At 2 p.m., law enforcement responded to River Road and 74th Street and found three vehicles, a Nissan Altima, a BMW X3 and a Lexus GX460, involved in a crash, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

A 29-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested while driving a stolen car in Fairfield on Thursday, March 20, authorities said.
At 8:30 p.m., officers were alerted via an Automated License Plate Reader that had a car had entered town after being reported stolen in West New York on Sunday, March 16, Fairfield police said.

Edwin B. A 37-year-old West New York man was found guilty of murder in the first degree on Monday, Jan. 27 after beating his mother to death in 2021, authorities said.
On Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021 at 1:30 p.m., West New York police responded to 439 66th St. and were met by Emmanuel Gonzalez. His mother, Irma Gonzalez, 62, was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

A 37-year-old West New York man was arrested and charged on Friday, Oct. 18 with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in March, authorities said.
The girl reported that in the early morning hours of Monday, March 11, she was approached by an unknown male, later identified as Christopher Ortiz, and she entered his vehicle, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Johnny A. Lara, a former West New York resident and police officer, died on Wednesday, Sept. 4. He was 53 years old.
Lara was born in Colombia and grew up in West New York, having served as a police officer before retiring and moving to Houston TX, according to his obituary on the Barquin Funeral Home website.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Valderramos Lara; their children Brandon, Bella and Jeremy Lara; his mother Emma J. Lara; and his siblings, Rosario Crabtree, Jimmy and Sammy Lara.
