Another Gaping Sinkhole Opens Up On Route 80 Route 80 is now closed in both directions in Wharton after yet another sinkhole opened, the NJ Department of Transporation announced Wednesday, March 19. The 15-foot b 15-foot hole opened along the eastbound work zone. This sinkhole is in addition to the other one right across the highway which opened months ago.  Multiple sinkholes have been cropping up due to a void discovered underneath the highway, officials said last month. On March 14, the DOT said the eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed for another two months due to repairs.
