Police Issue Alert Following Multiple Coyote Sightings In Westchester
While most are fretting over the unabated spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), a village in Westchester is warning of a different potential threat: coyotes. The Scarsdale Police Department issued a warning to area residents after there were multiple coyote sightings in the area of Mamaroneck and Saxon Woods Roads near Meadow Road. Police said that the coyotes did not appear threatening, and there was no contact with area residents, most of whom have been in self-isolation due to the virus. Area Man Admits To Illegally Hunting Deer
An Ulster man paid $605 in fines and surcharges after he admitted to baiting and illegally hunting deer. Ulster County resident Robert Nelson, of Esopus, was charged with the misdemeanor of illegally taking a deer and a violation of hunting with the aid of bait in November 2019, after the state Department of Environmental Conservation received a tip, the state DEC said on Thursday, Jan. 9. One of the first bear sightings of the New Year has been reported in the area. It happened on Wednesday, Jan. 8 near the Putnam County/Dutchess border where a Pawling resident received a surprise when she checked her home's surveillance camera feed and found an unexpected visitor: a black bear. It has taken a village of volunteers to help two wayward pelicans survive after the duo failed to fly south and were stranded on Long Island. The two young brown pelicans currently are safely tucked in at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Center in Hampton Bays, but both are a little worse for the wear after getting too cold when they were hanging out in Montauk near the fishing docks. Recent reports of a deer roaming Upper Saddle River with a plastic pumpkin stuck to its head turned out to be true, said authorities who rescued the crippled creature on Tuesday. A yearling deer with its snout stuck in a Halloween bucket for days was saved thanks to concerned residents and animal control officials. Two sightings of coyotes - estimated at approximately 40 pounds each - were reported in New Rochelle in recent days. One Bald Eagle Dies, One Fighting For Life After Separate Incidents
One bald eagle died and a second is fighting for life after separate incidents in Connecticut, according to the Audubon Society. One eagle, initially rescued by state police, was found on the side of Route 8, in the area of exit 25, in the Beacon Falls/Naugatuck region, said the Audubon Sharon on Facebook. A slow-walking pedestrian in Boonton briefly backed up traffic during the morning rush hour Wednesday. Many motorists, however, probably weren't too upset with him (or her), since this pedestrian is greenish, cold-blooded and on four legs.
