Virginia National Guard Deployed To Help With Snow Storm Several days after a snowstorm clogged I-95 in Virginia and left thousands of commuters stranded for hours, the state's national guard has been activated to help with a second snowstorm. The Virginia National Guard has staged approximately 40 Soldiers and Airmen for severe winter weather response duty on Jan. 6. About 20 Soldiers are on duty in the Southwest Virginia area and ready to respond, and about 20 Airmen are mustered in the Virginia Beach area. Areas in the south received the least amount of snow, while further west in Garret County there were reports of up to 8 inches of snowfall. Even though the snow has stopped for today forecasters are warning that temperatures will continue to be near-freezing and wont go above 30 degrees. Police In Maryland Announce 'Snow Emergency' Maryland State Police say snow emergency plans are in effect in several counties due to the winter storm blasting through the state. When snow emergency plans are in effect Maryland law requires motorists to operate vehicles that are equipped with snow tires to do so as designated by the manufacturer or equipped with chains.
