Darien Arts Center Makes Deal on Rent With Town DARIEN, Conn. – A dispute over the cost of holding dance classes in the Senior Center facilities was settled between the Darien Arts Center and the town Monday night. After some negotiations, it was decided that the DAC will pay a flat fee of $19 per hour when it uses the Senior Center. The decision applies retroactively to last year and resolves the problem of whether the DAC would pay separate rates for when the facility was heated and when it was not. The DAC had already set the price of its dance classes based on a flat rate, and then received an invoice from the town asking it to pay $1…

Darien Rowayton Bank Makes Gift to Fire Department DARIEN, Conn. — The purchase of a thermal-imaging camera is a step closer after Jack Dowling of the Darien Rowayton Bank presented a check to the Darien Fire Department. Fire Lt. Andrew Malewicz was part of the Ladder Replacement Committee that has been working on this project since 2007. Thermal-imaging cameras can "see" through darkness or smoke, allowing firefighters to quickly find the source of a structure fire or see the heat signature of visually obscured victims. The cameras can be used in a search for victims outdoors on a cool night, spot smoldering fires inside a wall or detect ove…

Darien Commuters Tired of Standing on Trains DARIEN, Conn. – As Gina Jenkins sat at the Darien train station waiting to go into New York City, she prayed she would get a seat. Jenkins goes to New York often to see shows, so she knows how overcrowded the trains can get. "It's beyond annoying," she said. Jenkins tries to arrive early to get a seat on the Metro-North train. But most shows end at about the same time, so everybody flocks out of the city on the same trains. "It's aggravating because everybody and his mother is taking that last train out of the city." Gina's mother, Marylou Jenkins, said, "One of my biggest concerns is peopl…
