Darien Fireworks Are Back With a Bang Darien Fireworks Are Back With a Bang Darien Fireworks Are Back With a Bang
Darien Fireworks Are Back With a Bang DARIEN, Conn. – After nine years, Darien once again celebrated Independence Day properly with a full fireworks show at Darien High School on Sunday night. After some fears that scattered rain throughout the day might delay or cancel the show, it went off as planned without a hitch. The thought of rain may have scared off some people — none of the nine designated viewing areas were full. But attendance was hardly scarce, either, with hundreds of families camping out on the field to watch the fireworks, which were shot off from beside the football field by Atlas Pyrotechnics. As soon as it wa…

Price of a Darien School Lunch Jumps 34% DARIEN, Conn. – The price of lunch at Darien elementary schools is going up for the second year in a row. The Board of Education voted this week to raise the school lunches from $2.85 to $3.15, a 34 percent jump. Richard Huot, school finance director, suggested the increase to the board, noting the rising cost of food, particularly since Darien is beginning to offer healthier and more varied food choices. "The cost of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, delivery fees, because of increasing oil prices, have all gone up." Darien elementary schools are also putting into effect a new…

Jayme Stevenson will replace Dave Campbell as the Republican nominee for first selectman, after Campbell decided he wanted to step down from the top spot to devote more time to his family business. Campbell will run to stay on the Board of Selectmen, along with fellow …

Darien Chamber Works To Prevent Further Robberies DARIEN, Conn. – After three robbers entered David Harvey Jewelers on Tuesday and smashed display cases with sledgehammers, Carol Wilder-Tamme decided that other businesses should know how to protect themselves from robberies. The Chamber of Commerce leader will work with the Darien Police Department on an education program for Darien businesses. "I asked Chief [Duane] Lovello if the police would be interested in putting together a program for Darien commercial businesses on how to be proactive in how they arrange their stores and train employees in order to reduce the chance of a robbery," W…

Darien Kids Show Architecture Skills in the Sand DARIEN, Conn. – If you host a sandcastle-building contest on Weed Beach, Darien kids won't settle for boring, run-of-the-mill sandcastles. They will use everything at their disposal to make original artistic structures such as boats, thrones, sports complexes and fortified compounds. "We wanted to do something different, so we made a boat," Kelsey Kopec said as she, Emma Smith, Anthony Corelli and their friend Samantha crafted a yacht with a full sun deck for the Darien Youth Commission's fifth annual sandcastle-building contest. Darien Jewelers Reflect on Robbery Darien Jewelers Reflect on Robbery Darien Jewelers Reflect on Robbery
Darien Jewelers Reflect on Robbery DARIEN, Conn. — The following is a statement from David Harvey Jewelers in reaction to Tuesday's robbery. We want to express our thanks to those who expressed concern over yesterday's events. Unfortunately, we cannot comment any further as this is an ongoing criminal investigation. Anyone who has ever been in our situation is acutely aware how it feels to be a victim of a crime. Although it was incorrectly reported that our staff was forced to the ground, a crime is something no one wants to live through. We are grateful no one from the David Harvey family was injured, and I know the memb…

Darien Makes the Switch to Natural Gas Darien Makes the Switch to Natural Gas Darien Makes the Switch to Natural Gas
Darien Makes the Switch to Natural Gas DARIEN, Conn. – Now that summer is here, most residents are probably concentrating on staying cool rather than keeping warm. But Darien is keeping an eye on the winter and has just signed a new deal that will heat the new police station, Town Hall and Hindley Elementary with natural gas. First Selectman Dave Campbell signed the contract with Yankee Gas to supply natural gas through a pipeline from Post Road to Town Hall. "Our furnaces burn natural gas or heating oil," he said. Though town hall has run for several years on heating oil, the switch to natural gas makes sense financially. "The …
