Runaway First Inning Dooms Wilton One bad inning cost Wilton the baseball game Monday against undefeated Fairfield Warde. The Warriors were unable to complete their comeback after the Mustangs scored eight first-inning runs en route to a 9-6 victory at Fairfield. "At 4:30 [game-time], Warde was ready to play and we were not,'' Wilton coach Tim Eagan said after his team fell to 2-2 overall and 1-2 against FCIAC teams. "They chipped away, and you can't question their fight. But you can't give a team like Fairfield Warde extra runs and extra outs. The hill was too big." Pitcher Paul Merola deserved a better fate. Fairfield p…

Darien Romps to Rugby Victory The Darien High School Rugby Club romped to a record victory Sunday, defeating Keio Academy, 59-33, in Purchase, N.Y. Scoring no fewer than nine tries to Keio's four, in what was by any standards a high-scoring game, the Blue Wave proved relentless in attack against a well-drilled Keio squad, which had little opportunity to develop its characteristic open style of play. Darien took the game to Keio from the outset, driving hard in the loose and exploiting a size and weight superiority in the forwards. Good possession from the Darien pack at both set pieces and in open play gave the Blue Wav…

Speedy Darien Woman Catches Marathon Bug Liz Herbert will bring a ton of race experience to her first Boston Marathon on April 18. Very little of it, however, is at the grueling 26.2-mile distance. The run from Hopkinton, Mass., to Boston will be only her second time running the distance. Her first was in the New York City Marathon in 2009. "I never would have considered running a marathon without the support of the Waveny Running Club,'' Herbert said of the group that meets Tuesday mornings at the New Canaan park. "I joined them a few years ago for some 'me' time, and everyone was talking about marathons. Their enthusiasm rubbed o…

Stars Skate to National Hockey Crown Mid Fairfield Stars hockey coach Moe Tarrant said before the Tier I national tournament that he believed defense is the key to winning championships. His statement proved prophetic Sunday as the Stars stopped high-scoring Assabet Valley of Massachusetts, 3-2, in a shootout, to win the tournament in Rochester, Mich. Catherine Crawley scored all three goals for the Stars, and Darien's Sasha Fritts had an assist. Norwalk's Nicole Lue and Annie Defrino and Fairfield's Taegan Blackwell are also members of the Stars. Tarrant is a resident of Norwalk and also coaches at Greenwich Academy. Assistant…
