Quinlan Pushes Past Tears at SpinOdyssey Joyce Quinlan will ride in the SpinOdyssey for the fifth time Sunday. She hasn’t participated in one yet without tears. She doesn’t expect anything different this time. “The first year I did SpinOdyssey (2007) I was a babbling, crying mess,’’ says Joyce, 51, a longtime Norwalk resident who works as a nurse in the intensive care unit at Norwalk Hospital. “It’s gotten easier over the years, but I still end up crying at some point.” SpinOdyssey is a fitness fundraising event that raises money for the American Cancer Society's breast cancer research. Among its beneficiaries is the Whittingham…

Staples Runners Take Their Marks Staples won two relays at the State Open indoor track and field meet two weeks ago in New Haven. But the stakes are even higher for the Wreckers on Friday night. Staples is seeded third in the 4x400 and sixth in the 4x800 for the meet, which will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. Coach Laddie Lawrence expects both relays will contend for medals. "They ran well at the State Open, but we were thinking beyond that meet,'' Lawrence said. "We're going to concentrate on both of them." The 4x400 with Jonathan Heil, Jack Roche, Sean Gallagher and Raphael Ray won the …
Weston Senior Swimmer Takes Center Stage Weston Senior Swimmer Takes Center Stage Weston Senior Swimmer Takes Center Stage
Weston Senior Swimmer Takes Center Stage The Weston High School boys swim team had a most unusual “Senior Night” ceremony during its final regular season dual meet against New Milford last week. The name was changed to “Spencer Night,’’ because Spencer Kelley was the team’s only senior. It has been an unusual year for Kelley, who swam on two relays that won Class S state championships last year as the Trojans won the team title. Weston finished the regular season this year with a 5-6-1 mark and is loaded with promising underclassmen. The Trojans do not figure to be a threat to win a second straight state title. ‘I think the bigg…

War Vet Rolls Through Challenging Buildup Race Helman Roman, a relative newcomer to the handbike, wasn't expecting such a grind during Sunday's Boston Buildup 25-kilometer race in Norwalk. "Boy, that was tough,'' said Roman, a 42-year-old resident of Manchester. "It's a good race course, and the beginning is really flat. After that, it seems like it's all uphill. It's a good course to prepare for the Boston Marathon." Roman was injured while serving with the U.S. Army. Both of his legs were shattered in Afghanistan on Sept. 11, 2009, when a bomb exploded underneath the armored car he was commanding. He spent a lengthy recuperation at Wal…
