Darien Wrestler Blooms Late, Still Wins State Darien High School's Lars Remole is a wrestling late bloomer. With his high school career winding down, the 140-pound Class L state champion is making up for his late start. Remole enters Friday's State Open championship as the No. 3 seed. He earned the Class L championship last weekend to go with the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title he acquired a week earlier. It's an amazing accomplishment given that Remole didn't pick up the sport until he was in high school. When Remole was playing rugby with some wrestlers on the high school team, they noticed his aggressive n…

Weston Swimmers Dunk New Milford It's unlikely that an undersized and inexperienced Weston High's boys swim team will be able to make a run at a second straight Class S state championship. Still, the Trojans closed the regular season on a winning note Thursday with a resounding 98-78 win over New Milford. The Trojans won every event to rout the Green Wave and finish the season with a 5-6-1 mark. Weston endured a rebuilding season after winning the Class S title last year. Six members of that team graduated, including four all-state swimmers. This team features just one senior, Spencer Kelley, who won two individual events a…

Darien Girls Reach Hockey Final The strength of Darien's girls hockey team under coach Al Gurney has been the Blue Wave's commitment to defense. In Wednesday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference semifinal against Wilton, that focus paid big dividends. The Blue Wave (15-6) held on to beat the Warriors, 3-2, at Darien Ice Rink to advance to Saturday's FCIAC championship game against New Canaan. The Rams advanced with a 5-2 win over Ridgefield in the nightcap. Sara Shaker had two goals and an assist to lead the Blue Wave. Wilton Girls Fall In Fciac Hockey Semis Wilton's girls hockey team pushed Darien right to the edge in Wednesday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference semifinal game at Darien Ice Rink. Unfortunately for the Warriors, their gas tank reached empty when they needed to kick it into high gear. The Blue Wave won, 3-2, to earn a spot opposite New Canaan in Saturday's FCIAC championship game. Wilton (14-5), which was making its first playoff appearance, withered in the third period against a stifling Darien defense. The Warriors played with a shorthanded roster due to injuries and an ill-timed vacation. The short roster …
