Weston Teen Builds Beyond Borders Weston Teen Builds Beyond Borders Weston Teen Builds Beyond Borders
Weston Teen Builds Beyond Borders The mudslides that destroyed towns in Guatemala still linger in the mind of Graham Anderson, even years later. The Weston senior visited the village of Chuk Muk as part of a project with Builders Beyond Borders. Mudslides created by Hurricane Stan in 2005 left an impression that Anderson won't forget. "There was an open field that was pure mud,'' Anderson said. "There was a canyon coming down the mountain where the mud had cleared all the trees. Residents told us there were still hundreds of family members buried there. Without a doubt, it's the most vivid memory I have of my three previous…

Young Tennis Players Court Success at Intensity Sean Brawley had success working with junior tennis players on an individual basis before he joined Intensity Fitness and Tennis last summer. Working with High Performance Director Ryan Ginley, Brawley has applied his methodologies to the elite group at the Norwalk-based club. The junior players' results have proven his coaching can work in large-scale settings, too. During the United States Tennis Association fall period of September to December, Intensity juniors won 45 events. In the two years previous to Brawley's guidance, players had won 18 events in 2008 and 19 in 2009. The juniors de…

Greens Farms Girls Fall to Hamden Hall Greens Farms Academy girls basketball coach Jen Doughty knew Hamden Hall liked to shoot from the perimeter. What surprised her was how many of the Hornets' players could do it. Hamden Hall stopped GFA, 70-59, Wednesday in a showdown for first place in the Fairchester Athletic Association. Stephanie Garofoli scored a career-high 32 for GFA, which fell to 14-7 overall and 6-2 in the league. Hamden Hall improved to 14-2, 7-1 in the league. Hamden Hall buried nine three-pointers in the win, including six by Kelsey McCray (25 points). GFA, one of the top defensive teams in the FAA, had hands i…
Magnoli Claims Rare Weston Wrestling Crown Magnoli Claims Rare Weston Wrestling Crown Magnoli Claims Rare Weston Wrestling Crown
Magnoli Claims Rare Weston Wrestling Crown Carmine Magnoli became just the sixth Weston High School wrestler to win a South-West Conference title. The medal that goes with it represents an incredible accomplishment for a young man who just a few years ago was ready to give up the sport. Magnoli, a senior, beat Newtown's Aaron Nezvesky, 5-2, in the 189-pound final last Saturday. Magnoli improved to 26-1 on the season. His only loss was to Greenwich's Ben Ceci, the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference champion, in December. It all seems odd now, given Carmine's level of success. After his freshman year, however, he was…

Renewal of Stamford Rivalry Stirs Fans' Passions "This,'' Stamford coach Jim Moriarty said after Tuesday's 55-49 win over Westhill, "was old-time Stamford basketball." It has been a long time coming. From a spectator standpoint, Tuesday's game featured the finest in the rivalry between the two schools. There have been games when the stakes might have been a little higher and the play a bit more crisp. There have only been a few, however, where fan engagement exceeded the level at Tuesday's game. It seemed to catch everybody off guard, too, as 15 minutes before tip-off only one side of the stands at Stamford High were pulled out for spec…
