Zeus Swimmers Take Command in Norwalk Meet Zeus Swimmers Take Command in Norwalk Meet Zeus Swimmers Take Command in Norwalk Meet
Zeus Swimmers Take Command in Norwalk Meet Zeus swim club teammates Meredith Pramer and Rachel Smolensky remember when the first Pat Spinola Meet was held eight years ago at Norwalk High School. They were just youngsters, and they recalled it as far less competitive than this weekend's affair. "There was Zeus and one or two other teams,'' Meredith said. "It has gotten a lot more competitive over the years." The meet kicked off Friday night and concludes Sunday. A total of 11 teams with about 350 swimmers are competing in age groups from under-9 to high school seniors. Teams from Rye, N.Y., all the way up to Litchfield County are com…

Staples Soccer Players Spread Warmth in Coat Drive The boys on the Staples High School soccer team collected coats for the Mercy Learning Center of Bridgeport at Friday's boys basketball game played at home against Bassick High School of Bridgeport. Players Max Hoberman, Kyle Hoberman and Taylor McNair collected the coats. Dr. Gerald Kuroghlian, a former English teacher at Staples who had the boys as students, helped the teens develop the idea to collect the coats, which will be distributed to women and children. "They were happy to help,'' Staples soccer coach Dan Woog said. "It was a success." Follow the Daily Westport on Facebook.

Norwalk Coxswain Focuses on Syracuse, Nationals It's ironic: Katherine Isaza is the smallest member of the Connecticut Boat Club's Women's 8-plus, but she wields the most control. As the coxswain, she directed the team to a gold medal in the U.S. Youth National Championships in June. The Norwalk High senior announced last week she will continue her rowing career at Syracuse University. Isaza is one of 10 seniors from the Norwalk-based CBC to firm up college commitments in the past few weeks. "I really like the environment, and I had a good rapport with the coach (Justin Moore),'' Katherine said. "It's an up-and-coming program." Isaza pac…
Trinity Girls Tripped Up by Trumbull Trinity Girls Tripped Up by Trumbull Trinity Girls Tripped Up by Trumbull
Trinity Girls Tripped Up by Trumbull One of the trademarks of Trinity Catholic’s successful girls basketball teams under coach Tom Kriz has been a tenacious defense. Friday night, Trumbull's girls solved the Crusaders' defense repeatedly, tallying a convincing 63-39 victory in Trumbull in a battle of teams undefeated in Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference play. "You have to give all the credit to them,'' Kriz said. "They played a whale of a game." Kelly Coughlin scored 17 points, including 10 in the first quarter, to pace the Golden Eagles (8-1 overall, 8-0 in the FCIAC). Mackenzie Griffin scored a game-high…

They will be distributed to the Mercy Learning Center, a Bridgeport organization that offers literacy and life-skills organization to women. "This is a great example of seeing a need and responding to it," said Staples head coach Dan Woog. "Dr. [Gerry]  Kuroghlian…

Greens Farms Conquers King Greens Farms Conquers King Greens Farms Conquers King
Greens Farms Conquers King Greens Farms Academy has a habit of starting slowly. Even so, the Dragons raced out to a 34-12 halftime lead and went on to defeat King of Stamford, 68-39, in a Fairchester Athletic Association boys basketball game Thursday in Stamford. GFA improved to 6-3 with its fourth straight win. King fell to 9-3. Weston's Dan Chase scored 21 points to lead the Dragons, while sophomore Sean Obi of Greenwich  muscled inside for 18 points and 18 rebounds. As usual for the Dragons lately, however, the victory was a team effort. Coach Doug Scott used all 12 players to keep the defensive pressure on King…
Ex-NBA Player Connects With Kids Ex-NBA Player Connects With Kids Ex-NBA Player Connects With Kids
Ex-nba Player Connects With Kids Frank Oleynick doesn't flaunt his days as an NBA player to the kids at the camps he runs as the director of We Are Future Stars, which holds sessions in Fairfield and other communities. He knows, however, that his professional resume carries weight. "The former NBA thing has a lot to do with it,'' says Oleynick, a former Notre Dame of Fairfield star who played for the Seattle Supersonics. "If I go and make 63 free throws in a row, they're in awe." Oleynick's path from high school and college star to NBA player to director of successful basketball instructional program was circuitous. Oleyni…
