Knights Shoot for Winning Season Knights Shoot for Winning Season Knights Shoot for Winning Season
Knights Shoot for Winning Season A season that has featured unusual highs and lows for Stamford High School concludes tonight when the Black Knights host Westhill High School at Boyle Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Stamford (5-4) can wrap up a winning season with a win over the Vikings (1-8). That's a modest goal for a team that just a few weeks ago was on the cusp of contention for the Class LL state playoffs. A 33-16 loss to Bridgeport Central ended those hopes. Stamford then lost its hopes for a city championship in a 42-28 setback to Trinity Catholic on Nov. 13. While the city title and state playoff aspirations …

Couple's Grant a Boon for Oyebog Joseph Oyebog returned to Cameroon over the weekend with new balls, racquets, clothes and all sorts of paraphernalia for the tennis academy that he runs in his native country. He also returned with blueprints to build a new structure on land that Oyebog Tennis Academy purchased. A donation from Westport residents Sunny Leigh and Guy Sherman helped Oyebog's group purchase nearly six acres to build a tennis facility that will include 16 courts. The players had been playing on makeshift surfaces since Oyebog, who teaches primarily in Westport and Fairfield during the summer, began the academy 1…

A fitness walk also is associated with the 5-mile race, which begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Southport. Runners can register online through Wednesday or on the day of the race. There will also be a shuttle from Sherwood Island State Park for overflow parking.

Merriss Joins Pequot Race for Long Run Weston's Ramsay Merriss will celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving. His tradition, however, at least in the morning, is becoming increasingly common among Fairfield County residents. Merriss, 62, runs the Pequot Runners Thanksgiving Day race every year. The race started in 1978. So did Merriss. He will line up for the 33rd straight year when the race starts Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. "It's a fun race,'' Merriss says. "It's a good way to start the holiday." Merriss started running when he was a student at Staples High School in the mid-1960s. He still runs six…
Rams Need Win to Earn Playoffs Rams Need Win to Earn Playoffs Rams Need Win to Earn Playoffs
Rams Need Win to Earn Playoffs Eight football teams will make the Class L playoffs in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference — and New Canaan is seeded ninth. That makes Thursday's Turkey Bowl at Darien at 10 a.m. a must-win for the Rams if they are return to the state playoffs. The Rams (8-1) lost to St. Joseph, 28-27, on Oct. 23. Six other teams in Class L also have one loss. New Canaan will qualify if it can beat the Blue Wave (10-0) in Thursday's showdown. A loss would nearly guarantee the Rams would not get to shoot for a fifth straight title. New Canaan has been explosive on offense, averaging nearly 4…

Fine Line Paves the Way for Darien When Darien High's football team took control of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game against Trumbull on Friday, it did not do it with its unrelenting defense. Running back Graham Maybell started the second half with a 24-yard run. Quarterback Chris Allam suddenly found time in the pocket. A team that generated 56 yards of total offense in the first half nearly equaled that on its first drive in the second, marching 53 yards for a touchdown. The difference en route to the 17-7 win was the Blue Wave's offensive line. The unit of Mason Barron, Charlie K…

Runners Flock to Pequot Race When Jeff Palmer started helping with the Pequot Running Club's annual 5-mile race on Thanksgiving in 1989, about 1,000 runners ran the race. The longtime race director never thought he would see the day when nearly 6,000 runners showed up. But that's how many runners Palmer expects will stand at the starting line at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. There is also a fitness walk. "It really started to take off in the last 10 years,'' Palmer said. "It was always a comfortable 1,000 to 1,500 runners. Over the course of the last 10 years, it has grown significantly. ... …
