Battista's Punt Return Boosts Giants Battista's Punt Return Boosts Giants Battista's Punt Return Boosts Giants
Battista's Punt Return Boosts Giants Patrick Battista's Fairfield Giants Junior Midgets teammates call him sneaky. Coaches call him smart. Waterbury players and coaches called him a lot of other things after he scored the game-winning touchdown on a 33-yard punt return Sunday. Battista's run lifted the Giants to a 12-6 victory over Waterbury in the semifinals of the Division I Southern Connecticut Pop Warner playoffs. Faced with fourth and long on its own 22, Waterbury punted and got off a short kick to the 33-yard line. Players raced toward the ball. Waterbury players did not touch it, however, and play seemingly stopped. Batt…

Norwalk Stunned in Soccer Playoffs Norwalk High's boys soccer team enjoyed a sensational 14-2 regular season en route to securing the No. 1 seed for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. That is small consolation for the Bears, however, who saw their quest for a league title derailed by eighth-seeded New Canaan on Friday night at Testa Field. The Rams won, 4-3, in penalty kicks. The score of the penalty kick tiebreaker was also 4-3. Andres Torres scored three goals for Norwalk, which built one-goal leads on three occasions. New Canaan rallied to tie the game each time, including a goal by Rams' …

Thomas Trains a Giant for a Run What do Easton's Chris Thomas and Tom Coughlin have in common? They both coached Amani Toomer, the former New York Giants receiver who will run the ING New York City Marathon on Nov. 7. Thomas, 38, owns Personal Training Professionals in Southport and is one of the nation's top triathletes. For the past six months, Thomas has coached Toomer as he prepares to run his first marathon. "It's been a pleasure,'' says Chris, who will run with Toomer. "He's a humble person who doesn't take himself too seriously. It has been a nice experience." Weston Runners Shoot for Title If everything breaks right, Weston High School's boys cross country team could win its fourth Class SS  championship in five years. Unfortunately for coach Marty Ogden and the Trojans, there are a lot of "ifs" that need to break right. The biggest concerns are injuries and illness. Senior Stephen Vento strained an Achilles muscle in last week's South-West Conference championships. Noah Krassin has been bothered by a hip flexor. Brad DeMarco has been sidelined by mononucelosis. In addition, Canton has a powerful team and is hungry to unseat the Trojans after falling short by just five points…

Giants Build Football Powerhouse Over the past few years, the Fairfield Giants have developed one of the top Pop Warner programs in New England, if not the country. Further evidence comes this weekend when four teams compete in the semifinals of the Southern Connecticut Division 1 playoffs at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. It is the first time the league, which began in 1966, has teams at every age level vying for a league championship. "The professionalism of the coaches, the training the players get, the players have really flourished with it,'' says Johnny Vasquez, a league spokesman. "The majority of our coaches worked …
