Staples Rocks Unbeaten Brookfield Staples Rocks Unbeaten Brookfield Staples Rocks Unbeaten Brookfield
Staples Rocks Unbeaten Brookfield After Staples' soccer team started the season with consecutive losses, it was reasonable to wonder whether it would be a factor in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. The perennially powerful Wreckers have since proven they are still a league force. Staples (9-2-1) bounced undefeated Brookfield on Saturday, 5-1, on goals by Mikey Scott, Lorenz Esposito, Jake Krosse, Steve Smith and Alex Tonsberg. Staples scored three goals in the first 12 minutes. "Since our slow start, we've worked hard on defending and attacking as a group. We've concentrated on set pieces, both offe…

New Canaan Black Holds Off Darien New Canaan Black Holds Off Darien New Canaan Black Holds Off Darien
New Canaan Black Holds Off Darien Sunday's battle between the New Canaan Black and Darien Blue eighth-grade teams was decided on defense. New Canaan twice stopped a conversion attempt in the final minute to defeat Darien, 8-6, in a Fairfield County Football League game at Darien High School. "It was a great team effort,'' New Canaan coach Ted Dumbauld said. "Sometimes it's offense, defense or special teams that help you win games. This time it was the defense and special teams." His son, Teddy, played a big part in it. He scored New Canaan's touchdown on a 40-yard punt return late in the first quarter. Sean Queally ran in f…

Stamford Honors Football's Golden Age Former players, coaches and their families celebrated the Golden Age of Stamford football Friday night at Boyle Stadium as five state championship teams were honored at a pregame reception. Players were also introduced during halftime of Stamford's 21-7 win over Danbury. Stamford won state titles in 1950, 1952, 1953, 1958 and 1959. "It feels good to see a lot of these guys again,'' said Richard Frattaroli, who played on the 1952 team. "A lot of them we'll see at the Old Timers' Dinner, but some of them we hardly ever see." The teams were inducted on the high school's Wall of Honor. Former …
Stamford Football Wins 3rd Straight Stamford Football Wins 3rd Straight Stamford Football Wins 3rd Straight
Stamford Football Wins 3rd Straight Stamford's football team is suddenly one of the hottest teams in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. The Black Knights won their third straight game, 21-7, over Danbury on Friday night at Boyle Stadium. Quarterback Bryan Boderick threw for two touchdowns, and the Stamford defense held the Hatters to 27 yards of total offense. "We really try to play a physical brand of football, and we did that on both sides of the ball,'' first-year coach Bryan Hocter said. "They were much bigger in person than they showed on film, and we had our hands full with them." Stamford's Matt …

Fairfield Woman Takes 8th in Hartford The difference between Megan Peterson's goal in the Hartford Marathon and her official finish was 118 seconds and would have bumped her up just one place. Still, her eighth place finish in last Saturday's race left her disappointed. "I thought sub three hours was a probability,'' the 27-year-old from Fairfield said. "Even though it was a personal best, I was a little disappointed. With three miles to go I hit a wall big time. I don't even want to know what I ran for that last 5K." Peterson finished with a net time of 3:01:57. It was her sixth marathon overall, and first in Hartford. Her pre…
