Mom Rides Wave of Emotion at Benefit Mom Rides Wave of Emotion at Benefit Mom Rides Wave of Emotion at Benefit
Mom Rides Wave of Emotion at Benefit Saturday's Matthew Zucker Memorial Ergathon will be bittersweet for Barbara Zucker. On the one hand, she's grateful the community supports the event, now in its 12th year, which raises money for scholarship programs for at-risk young people offered by the Norwalk River Rowing Association. On the other, she wishes her son, who died of brain cancer in 1998, could be there. "It always is an emotional day,'' says Barbara, who joined the NRRA in 1986 and is one of its charter members. "Because my son was so attached to the NRRA and rowing, and it meant so much to him, I'd rather put my efforts in…

Firemen Claim Industrial Crown The Norwalk Fire Department softball team is a mix of veterans and up-and-coming players who have recently joined the team. On Thursday, they were crowned champions. Matt Zeremsky scored the winning run in the seventh as the Fire Department defeated Reed Expo, 8-7, at Calf Pasture Beach. Veteran team member Gene DeAngelas said it was the team's first Industrial League title since 2005. "We're scrappy, we're always trying to put up runs,'' manager and leadoff hitter Dennis Dustin said. "It's hard to get everyone to the games because we all work nights. For the playoffs, we made sure we got g…

Swingers Capture Coed Softball Title Lightning danced in the sky and rain fell as Kyle Mastropietro raced around the diamond on a game-ending home run Wednesday night. Although Mastropietro's two-run blast didn't officially count, it put the finishing touches on the Swingers' 11-7 win over previously unbeaten Infusium in the Co-Ed Softball League championship game. "I thought we had the team that could do it,'' pitcher Chuck Mitchell said. "We peaked at the right time. They're a great team. We knew it would be a battle for sure." The Swingers led 11-7 after five innings. Infusium did not score in the sixth, then the Swingers s…

Rower Swept Onto a New Stage Marianne Hoeft wasn't sure how she would do on the United States Junior rowing team at last month's world championships. She had made her mark as a sculler, handling one oar. This time she was being asked to sweep, with two oars. But Hoeft made the transition flawlessly, and has the medal to prove it. She picked up a silver medal with the women's eight at the junior championships in Racice, Czech Republic. Among her teammates was Southport's Rosemary Grinalds. Great Britain beat the U.S. to the finish line by just over three seconds. "I wouldn't say we were surprised at our finish," Marian…

Johnson Heads to Mid-Am Tee Party Debbie Johnson is different from many of the other golfers playing in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur that begins Saturday at Wichita Country Club in Kansas. The 47-year-old Stamford woman did not grow up playing golf in country clubs with hours of instruction from a private coach. Johnson is a self-made player. Johnson, who played softball and volleyball and swam while growing up in Michigan, picked up golf in her mid 20s. She plays regularly on weekends, but her practice time is limited by her commute to New York for work. "I had my fair share of whiffs when I started playing,'' Debbie said. …
Runners Booked for Library Race Runners Booked for Library Race Runners Booked for Library Race
Runners Booked for Library Race Vicki Oatis will be first to admit she knew little about organizing a road race. She has learned a lot, however, in the past few months by organizing the Run Between the Libraries. The 5-kilometer race steps off at 9 a.m. Sunday from Union Park in Norwalk. "I have the utmost respect for people who do this all the time,'' says Vicki, the children's librarian at the branch on Belden Avenue. "There's so many little details." Vicki has wanted to create a race to benefit children's services at the library since she began working there four years ago. She also thought it would be a terrific commu…
