Pia Tackles Difficult Transition Pia Tackles Difficult Transition Pia Tackles Difficult Transition
Pia Tackles Difficult Transition Tom Pia jumped immediately from one softball season to another. It was not easy. "Our last game in the high school season was Saturday night,'' Tom said. "Our first game of summer ball was Sunday. We were playing at such a high level that if you made one mistake it could cost you the game and we went right into the new season. It took half the summer season to adjust." Pia's not complaining. He coached the Westhill High School softball team to the Class LL championship in June. It was the Vikings' second state title, and first since 1992. He also coaches the Tradition South 16-and-under soft…

Norwalk Stars Shine Under Stress Norwalk Stars Shine Under Stress Norwalk Stars Shine Under Stress
Norwalk Stars Shine Under Stress Norwalk's All-Stars will hit, pitch and run with the best 12-year-old teams in the world in the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md. And Norwalk's stats are hardly a measure of its moxie, which just might be the team's best trait. Three times this summer, Norwalk has faced a win-or-go home situation. It lost to New Canaan in the District 1 championship, 12-11. But Norwalk got a reprieve when it earned an at-large bid to the state tournament, and it's made the most of its opportunity. Norwalk went undefeated in the state tournament, and then rolled through the New England regional and int…

O'Neill's Rallies for Dramatic Win Jill Cimminello's friends on the O'Neill's Pub team begged her to play with them this year in the Norwalk Women's League. Thursday night, Cimminello showed why she's valuable. Her third hit capped a five-run seventh inning rally to lift O'Neill's Pub over Partner's Café, 8-7, in the championship game at Calf Pasture Beach. Partner's needed to defeat O'Neill's twice and was one out away from forcing a winner-take-all game. O'Neill's, the league's regular-season champion, pieced together a two-out, none-on rally to win the title. "We actually were the team we've been all year in the seventh,'…
