Hitting the Streets in a Mehari Hitting the Streets in a Mehari Hitting the Streets in a Mehari
Hitting the Streets in a Mehari Robin Heath never expected to find a Citroen Mehari in the United States. He finally found one on E-bay about two years ago from a person in New Jersey. He drew a lot of attention as he drove his 1969 fire engine red vehicle into Westport Town Hall Saturday to watch his daughter's softball game. The French-made car is made of plastic. It was sold in the United States for just one year, in 1970, according to Wikipedia. Only 214 were sold in the U.S. Which is why Heath had a hard time finding it. "I've been looking for one for 20 years,'' Heath said. The car has excellent off-road qualities and…

Benke Runs to Win in Minute Man Benke Runs to Win in Minute Man Benke Runs to Win in Minute Man
Benke Runs to Win in Minute Man In a confusing but ultimately justified finish, Blake Benke of Westport was declared the winner of the Minute Man 10-kilometer run Sunday. Nadeem Ahmad of Westport, who crossed the finish line first, was credited with second. Cyclists leading the runners went off course, causing Benke and two other runners to run additional distance. "I would have liked to have had the trophy, but the bike went down the wrong way,'' said Ahmad, who in a gesture of sportsmanship accepted second. "I've seen it happen before. It's not the fault of the race organizers. Sometimes these things happen." Benke's wi…

Ice Box Takes 2nd in Derby Ice Box Takes 2nd in Derby Ice Box Takes 2nd in Derby
Ice Box Takes 2nd in Derby Westport horse owner Robert LaPenta came within a couple of lengths of having his first Kentucky Derby winner Saturday. Ice Box, with Jose Lezcano up, made a strong run in the stretch but couldn't catch winner Super Saver. Ice Box took second, 2 ½ lengths behind the winner. "At the half-mile pole he started running, but I didn't want to go wide in a 20-horse field," Lezcano said in The Star-Ledge of New Jersey. "I had to check at the quarter-pole but he came again and made a big run." Ice Box, who drew the second post position, didn't figure to be a factor for most of the race. He was 11th a…

McMahon Lacrosse Tops Norwalk McMahon Lacrosse Tops Norwalk McMahon Lacrosse Tops Norwalk
McMahon Lacrosse Tops Norwalk Brien McMahon's boys lacrosse game found a solution to its inability to score goals. His name is Isaac Miranda. He scored four goals last night to lead the Senators to a 7-3 win over crosstown rival Norwalk before a lively crowd at McMahon. "I certainly hope so,'' McMahon coach Mike Epstein said when asked if Miranda is capable of becoming a consistent scoring threat for the Senators. "Let's hope he does it next game as well." Miranda scored three goals in the first half and had the lone second half score as the Senators improved to 3-6. Norwalk fell to 4-5. Scott McCormack had a goal and a…
