Concussion Concern Prompts PAL Changes Concussion Concern Prompts PAL Changes Concussion Concern Prompts PAL Changes
Concussion Concern Prompts PAL Changes A little more than three years ago, Carm Roda had a simple explanation of a concussion. "I thought it that was you got hit in the head and it hurts,'' says the youth sports director of the Westport Police Athletic League. He has learned a lot since that time, and Westport children are much better for it. Roda has instituted mandatory concussion training for all coaches in Westport PAL programs. The PAL conducted a seminar on how to treat concussions Sunday at Saugatuck Elementary School. Westport's youth football program was the second in the country to make concussion training mandatory. R…

Deaths of Sportsmen Hits Close to Home Deaths of Sportsmen Hits Close to Home Deaths of Sportsmen Hits Close to Home
Deaths of Sportsmen Hits Close to Home I'm a sports guy. Always have been. It frustrates my wife a lot, because if there's somebody running, throwing, swinging, hitting, pitching, catching, passing, swimming, skating or riding, I get dialed in. It's probably not entirely healthy, but I am what I am. Marco Monteiro and Marvin Perkins were sports guys. Both were big parts of the Norwalk sports scene. Monteiro was a star athlete at now-closed Central Catholic, and played and coached in town. Perkins made his name in Stamford, but he lived in Norwalk and played touch football in the Recreation and Parks League. He loved to play softb…

Kids Swing Away at Tennis Jamboree Kids Swing Away at Tennis Jamboree Kids Swing Away at Tennis Jamboree
Kids Swing Away at Tennis Jamboree Marvin Tyler loves teaching tennis to children in the community. The only thing he might love more is giving back to the parents and players who support his programs at Slammer Tennis World. Tyler gave back Thursday in the form of his fifth annual Tennis Jamboree at Ben Franklin School. About 40 children who play in Tyler's after school programs hit forehands, backhands and serves in the party-like atmosphere. The jamboree was free for the players, who ranged in age from 5-17. Tyler teaches children three days a week at Franklin. His youngest group, ages 5-8, plays on Tuesdays. Juniors, age…
Cross Collects 100th Win as McMahon Tops Norwalk Cross Collects 100th Win as McMahon Tops Norwalk Cross Collects 100th Win as McMahon Tops Norwalk
Cross Collects 100th Win as McMahon Tops Norwalk John Cross tasted victory for the 100th time as the coach of the Brien McMahon baseball team, and, boy, it was sweet. The Senators improved to 2-0 with 6-2 victory over city rival Norwalk behind the three-hit pitching of senior Eric Stenger before a large night crowd at McMahon's field. "It's a small little milestone, but it's especially nice to get it against Norwalk,'' said Cross, who is in his ninth year. "They're a class program. I didn't think we'd be 2-0 right out of the box." McMahon backed up Wednesday's 16-7 rout of Bunnell with a brilliant effort from Stenger, who fanned nine and …

Friends, Teammates Saddened by Perkins' Death Shawn Jennett wanted Marvin Perkins to switch sports. "I told him you need to stop playing softball and start playing golf,'' Jennett says. "I could never get him to go out there. He didn't want to mess up his baseball swing." Perkins, 36, of Norwalk died in a traffic accident on March 28 in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Perkins and his fiancé, Nicole Fagan, were returning home after Perkins played in a softball tournament in South Carolina and visiting a Fagan family member. The couple is survived by four children. Perkins played touch football in Norwalk, but he was one of the best softball playe…
Kuchta Makes Surprisingly Swift Return Kuchta Makes Surprisingly Swift Return Kuchta Makes Surprisingly Swift Return
Kuchta Makes Surprisingly Swift Return Emily Kuchta couldn't sit still any longer. The New England College junior, who broke her left fibula during a women's hockey game on Jan. 29, has made a surprisingly swift return and is back playing with the school's lacrosse team. The former Brien McMahon High star has played two games for New England, and netted her first goal Monday in a 14-9 loss to Keene State. She came back Wednesday night to score two goals and pick up three ground balls off the bench in a 20-5 win over Anna Maria. New England is 4-5 and could use Kuchta's help offensively. Last year, she scored 25 goals. "It's hard…
