Frank D. Gilroy, Noted Hudson Valley Playwright Frank D. Gilroy, who won a Pulitzer prize for his 1964, died on Saturday at home in Monroe, N.Y. He was 89. Gilroy also won a Tony and a Drama Critics’ Circle award for the play, “The Subject Was Roses.” He was also a screenwriter, film producer and director. Gilroy wrote more than 30 other plays, but “Roses” was the most successful. He also wrote screenplays for 10 films, and a host of other television productions. The Subject Was Roses, about a World War II veteran returning home to the Bronx, according to a story on NPR.org. It starred Martin Sheen in the role of Timmy and Irene Dailey…
