Freshman Mariano From Yorktown Flying High For UMass Lacrosse YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Yorktown’s Nick Mariano just wanted to contribute as an incoming freshman for the powerful lacrosse team at the University of Massachusetts. He has, and in a big way. Mariano has nine goals in UMass’ first three games and earned Player of the Week and co-Rookie of the Week honors from the Colonial Athletic Association. The freshman attack’s early success has helped UMass spurt to a 3-0 start, including a win over No. 14 Ohio State. Darien's Ice Cats U12 Girls Hockey Team Wins State Tournament DARIEN, Conn. – The Connecticut Ice Cats 12-and-under girls hockey team, which is sponsored by the Darien Youth Hockey Association, won the Tier II Connecticut Hockey Conference state tournament last weekend with a dominating performance in Simsbury. The Ice Cats defeated Greenwich Skate Club, 2-1, in the championship game. In four games, the Ice Cats outscored opponents, 24-2. Darien opened with a 2-0 win over Greenwich before routing Northern Lights Maroon, 9-0, and the Polar Bears, 11-1. Redding Figure Skater Plans To Try For Olympic Repeat In 2018 REDDING, Conn. – Redding figure skater Brooklee Han is pleased with her performance at the Olympic in Sochi and is now looking to competing again in the 2018, she said in a YouTube interview posted by the Australia Olympic Team. Former Football Player From Stamford Impresses NFL Scouts NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s Kevin Pierre-Louis, who played his high school football in Stamford, was among the most impressive players working out Monday at the National Football League combine in Indianapolis. Harvey Boys, Girls Basketball Teams Fall In League Playoffs BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The Harvey School's boys and basketball teams were ousted from the Hudson Valley Athletic League playoffs last week. Forman eliminated the boys basketball team in the HVAL semifinals, 60-52. Forman jumped out to an 11-2 lead and was on its way. Harvey trimmed the deficit but could not grab the lead. Norwalk's Logan Takes 3rd In Grueling Three-Day Florida Endurance Race NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s Nick Logan got an early start to the endurance sports season for 2014 by finishing third over the weekend at the Ultraman Florida race in Orlando. The three-day race consisted of a 6.2-mile swim, 263 miles of cycling and a 52-mile run. Wilton Wahoos Win 27th Straight YMCA State Crown WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Wahoos youth swim team won its 27th straight YMCA state championship earlier this month. The Wahoos compiled 3,517 points to easily outdistance the Westport Water Rats, who compiled 1,948. The Cheshire Sea Dogs were third with 1,884.5. In addition, after a steady climb within the silver and bronze medal club standings, the Wilton Y Wahoos have risen to gold medal recognition with a 12th place finish this year in the USA Swimmers Club Excellence program.
