Layoffs are sweeping across the country at a pace not seen in years, hitting government workers, retail employees, and tech professionals the hardest, according to a new study.
US employers announced 172,017 layoffs in February, the highest total since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020, according to a report released by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas on Thursday, Mar. 6. Last month's cuts were 245 percent higher than January and more than double the job losses from February 2024.

Brightwaters Girl, 17, Second Teen Have Been Missing For Days
Authorities are asking for help in locating a pair of missing teenagers from Long Island.
Angelina Smith, 17, of Brightwaters, was last seen on Thursday, Feb. 27, while Muhammad Sabir, 16, of Deer Park hasn’t been seen since Friday, Feb. 28.
Both teens’ disappearance were spotlighted by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Smith is believed to be in the Deer Park area, and may be with a male companion, authorities said.
Sabir may have traveled to Boston. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, purple sweatpants, and white sneakers.
