Construction Worker Helps Capture Violent Ex-Con In Edgewater Police Assault, Authorities Say
A fleeing ex-con assaulted two Edgewater police officers before a good Samaritan helped capture him, authorities said. Jason Westlee, 34, of East Orange was loading merchandise stolen from the Old Navy in the Edgewater Commons mall into a UHaul truck with a female companion from Brooklyn when police rolled up last Wednesday, Chief Donald Martin said. As they questioned the pair, Westlee pushed one of the officers and ran toward a building under construction, Martin said. A troubled Cliffside Park man surrendered peacefully after a disturbance at his home triggered a sizable law enforcement response. The body of a 92-year-old Edgewater man who left his walker, wallet and other belongings at the end of a Hudson River pier was recovered from the East River near the Brooklyn Bridge, authorities said. No foul play was suspected in the death of Patrick O’Kane, Edgewater Police Chief Donald Martin said. A New York Waterway captain summoned them after finding O’Kane’s things – including a jacket, gloves, a hat and keys -- at the Edgewater Marina on River Road just south of the George Washington Bridge on April 13, the chief said. The founder and CEO of a sports rehab and medical center in Edgewater was charged with practicing physical therapy without a license, authorities said. Kim Pozharsky, 48, of North Bergen has never been licensed to practice physical therapy in the state of New Jersey, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Fire Investigators Examine Fort Lee House Blaze
Firefighters contained a Fort Lee house blaze to a front bedroom after a passing lieutenant saw smoke. Fire Lt. Phil Craddock was driving on the Route 1&9 overpass around 4:45 p.m. Monday when he spotted the smoke coming from the two-story home at 2068 Jones Road just below. Firefighters knocked the blaze down in under a half hour. No injuries were reported. The rest of the house beyond the fire room sustained smoke, water and ventilation damage.
