Tropical Storm Erin is gaining strength over the open Atlantic, with forecasters warning that the system could soon become one of the most powerful storms of the year, with parts of the East Coast potentially in its eventual path.
Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center and AccuWeather expect Erin to reach major hurricane strength this weekend, likely on Saturday, Aug. 16, as it passes north of the Leeward Islands, with the Bermuda High helping steer it toward open waters.

Port Jeff Sisters, 16, Have Been Missing For Days
Authorities are asking for help in locating two Long Island sisters who have been missing for several days.
Daneayah and Daneajah Johnson, both 16, were last seen in Port Jefferson Station on Saturday, Aug. 9, according to the New York State Missing Persons Clearinghouse.
Daneayah was wearing a black shirt, gray pants, and gray Jordan shoes, while Daneajah had a blue sweater, black sweatpants, and slippers.
The girls may have traveled to Philadelphia, police said.

Three individuals, including a 17-year-old, robbed a pizza delivery driver on Long Island before fleeing on foot, police said.
The incident happened in Roosevelt just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, when a 32-year-old Domino’s employee attempted to deliver food to a home on Woods Avenue.
Three males approached him, claimed they had ordered the food, and demanded he hand it over.
When the driver asked for payment, one of the suspects grabbed the pizza, another took a bag containing soda, and the group pushed and spit on the victim before running off, according to Nassau County Police. …

A traffic stop in Dutchess County led to the arrest of a Long Island man after police said they discovered more than a pound of cocaine in his vehicle.
The arrest happened at around 3 p.m. on Monday, August 4, when troopers pulled over a 2024 Toyota traveling northbound on the Taconic State Parkway in the Town of East Fishkill for vehicle and traffic violations, New York State Police said in an announcement on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
The driver, identified as Clinton P. Moody, age 46, of Hempstead in Nassau County, was the only one inside the vehicle, police said.

A pedestrian was seriously hurt when a Long Island woman allegedly struck him while driving impaired near the Long Island Expressway, Suffolk County police announced on Sunday, July 27.
The crash happened just after 12:30 a.m. on Express Drive South near Exit 64 in Medford, according to the release.
Tia Gardner, 26, of Mastic, was heading east in a 2024 Hyundai Kona when she hit a man attempting to cross the roadway on foot, police said.

Missing 14-Year-Old Girl From New Cassel May Have Been Heading To Roosevelt Field Mall
Nearly 48 hours have passed since a Long Island teenager went missing.
Aylin Gonzales, 14, of New Cassel, was last seen at around 1 p.m. Sunday, July 20, according to Nassau County Police. Family members reported her missing the following day.
Gonzales is 4-foot-8 and 100 pounds, with long dark hair, a medium complexion, and brown eyes. She was wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts, and black sneakers.
