Two vehicles hit a man as he tried to cross dark, busy Route 17 in Ramsey, authorities said. Described only as in his 20s, the victim was wearing dark clothing when he tried to make his way across the highway roughly a half-mile south of the Lake Street overpass shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, Ramsey Police Chief Brian Lyman said. Where he was headed wasn’t clear. Store Clerk From Ramsey Charges With Collecting Child Porn
A 42-year-old store clerk from Ramsey was charged with collecting online child porn. Steven Vanduysen was arrested during a raid of his Spruce Run condo last Friday, Oct. 14, and remained in the Bergen County Jail on Tuesday, records show. Firefighters Douse Mahwah Basement Blaze Near Rockland Border
Firefighters battled heat exhaustion along with a basement blaze Wednesday night in Mahwah. No serious injuries were reported in the fire, which broke out shortly before 8 p.m. in the two-story home on dead-ended Storrs Court off East Crescent Road near the Rockland County border. Firefighters had the blaze knocked down within a half-hour. The cause wasn't immediately determined. Mutual aid at the scene or in coverage included firefighters from Ramsey, Wyckoff, Hillburn, Sloatsburg, Suffern and Tallman, as well as Mahwah police and EMS.

Gym Fire Doused Off Route 17
Firefighters doused an early-morning commercial blaze off Route 17. The two-alarm fire broke out in a building that houses Powerhouse Gym on McKee Drive in Mahwah around 7 a.m. Firefighters had it knocked down in under a half-hour. Island Road was temporarily closed. No injuries were reported. Mahwah firefighters brought their fan boat to ventilate the building. Mutual aid responders requested either at the scene or in coverage included firefighters from Ramsey, Montvale, Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus, as well as Hilburn, Hillcrest, Sloatsburg, Suffern and Tallman.

Tractor-Trailer Fire Closes Route 17
A rush-hour fire incinerated the cab of a tractor-trailer on Route 17. The rig ignited on the southbound highway in Ramsey just before the Franklin Turnpike exit and across from the Shannon Rose restaurant, sending a column of black smoke skyward that could be seen for miles. Police temporarily closed both sides of the highway as members of the Ramsey Fire Department and Rescue Squad doused the late afternoon blaze with help from their Mahwah colleagues.
