How 22-Year-Old Staples HS Grad Will Help Shake Up State Senate
Will Haskell, who announced his State Senate candidacy during his senior year of college, ran on a platform of restoring tolls to highways, paid family leave and tougher gun control laws. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the 22-year-old Haskell of Westport toppled Toni Boucher of Wilton, a Republican who has served in the state legislature since 1997 including the 26th Senate District — nearly as long as Haskell has been alive. Middle School In Westport Will Remain Closed Through June Due To Mold Issue
Mold and architectural issues will keep the doors of a Fairfield County middle school shuttered for the rest of the academic year. The Coleytown Middle School in Westport, which was shut down last month due to an ongoing mold problem, will be closed through June, officials announced this week. The closure came after a rise in absences and medical complaints from students to begin the school year, which led to the initial shut down. Sophomore From Westport Dies In College Dorm Room
A sophomore college student from Fairfield County died in his dorm room at Providence College on Thursday night. Augustus Cardello of Westport was 19. Police have ruled out foul play and the Providence Police Department said the death does not appear suspicious, but no cause of death has been given, the Providence Journal reported. Cardello graduated from Staples High School in 2017. Daily School Threats Multiply In Hudson Valley, Nationwide Since Shooting
In the weeks since he Feb. 14 mass shooting in Parkland, Fla., there have been more than 72 threats every day at schools nationwide, according to an Ohio educational group.That is more than seven times the normal daily average, which includes bomb threats and false fire alarms. Westport Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer praised both her students and staff members at Staples High School in the wake of a threat that forced a precautionary early dismissal on Tuesday. Staples High Admins Failed To Act When Students Reported Sex Assault
Four Staples High School students said school administrators failed to act when they reported sexual assault from another student, the Connecticut Post reports. During a Board of Education meeting Monday, one student said the four of them reported the abuser together and were told by the administration to not make school a "hostile environment" for him, the article says.
