A man has been convicted of sex trafficking after using drugs and violence to force a woman into prostitution across Suffolk County, prosecutors announced on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Michael Howell, 65, of Brooklyn and originally from Barbados, was convicted by a jury on Aug. 26, 2025, of two counts of sex trafficking and several related charges following a trial before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney.

A man lured a 16-year-old girl from a public library by Snapchat before allegedly raping her behind a Long Island fire department, prosecutors announced on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Delon Hughes, 34, of Brooklyn, met the teen at the Brentwood Public Library on June 11, 2025, after using the handle “Josephpatri9300” on Snapchat to connect with her, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said. The two then walked to the Brentwood Fire Department, where Hughes sexually abused her among parked cars, according to investigators.

A woman was struck and killed by a Suffolk County Transit bus in Port Jefferson Station, Suffolk County police announced on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Carrie Sansone, 62, attempted to run westbound across the roadway in front of 204 Route 25A when she was hit by a southbound bus at 10:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, according to detectives.
Sansone, of Port Jefferson Station, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
